100 team from New York City attended First Lego League Competition Sunday. The rule of FLL game is to accomplish mission using their own creative Lego Mindstorm Robot. With time constraint, the team needs to accomplish the mission given set of rule and paramenter. This year’s mission is called Smart Move.
With exception of one team, all team are represented by school. This special team is called FOREST HILL LEGO CLUB. With all three teams qualified and well represented, the Forest Club Team is supported and cheerleaded by their supporting parents.
As a graduate of MIT, coach Iffat Mai describe the club as a hobby (fan) club with 19 children (age between 9-14). The mission of the club is to promote science interest to children. With the support of many parent and children, the club has grown since the inception of club.
Forest Hill Lego Club team member, 11 years Lee Ming Yi(Sharon Lee) , and her teammate rise to compete in the Robot performance game yesterday. With technical difficulty of robot mal function, they keep their confidence and did it again in the subsequent round. His brother is also a club member. Father Lee Hai describes their family involvement in FLL enhanced the communication channel among the family member. The bonding experience works out great with club participation. They kids also has embraced the passion toward learning which is beyond the scope of just science learning. *********************************************************************** http://www.singtao.com/oversea/0316ao50.html 機 器 人 比 賽 揭 曉 賓 州 紐 約 三 校 合 組 隊 伍 奪 冠 (本報記者廖國文紐約報道)以鼓勵及培養兒童及青少年對科學工程興趣為宗旨的機器人比賽(Robotics Competitions)，今年於紐約市已踏入第10屆。 昨 (14日)於賈維茨會議展覽中心展開決賽，經過激烈的角逐，由賓州Wissahickon High School、紐約市的史蒂文生高中與布朗士科學高中合組的隊伍奪得冠軍，另外還有樂高科技挑戰賽(Lego League Citywide Championship)，不少華裔學生參與其中大展身手。 機器人比賽是由「科技創意及識別協會」(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science 這一次機器人比賽十分講求 學生的創意，根據比賽規劃，每個隊伍只會獲發機械零件，卻不會有任何指引，學生需要與導師一起，利用6個星期的時間，設計及製作出可以參賽的搖控機器車， 它們能踢球、旋轉、翻新、攀爬，甚至能用機械臂將自己抬高。三個隊伍三部機器車將會合成一組作賽，於為時2分15秒的過程，看誰能進多少球及做出各項指定 動作而進級。 這項賽事共有64隊參加，經過激烈的角逐，最終由賓州Wissahickon High School、紐約市的史蒂文生高中與布朗士科學高中合組的隊伍勝過強勁的對手，奪得賽事的冠軍，而這三個隊伍當中，都有不少華裔隊員參與其中。 16 歲的劉志為及高涓蕾都是來自賓州Wissahickon High School的過江龍，劉志為說，這是他第二年參加比賽，主力責負動畫設計，整個團隊有50多人，各人盡不同的職責，合力奪取好成績，現在雖然仍就讀11 年級，但他希望日後能在大學修讀工程學科，去年他們曾於聖地牙哥舉行的賽事中奪過第一名，希望今年晉身全國大賽後，繼續奪取佳續。 除了機器人大賽外，昨天還有樂高科技挑戰賽，100隊來自全市的隊伍分別參與了初中與小學組的賽事，比賽的規則是參賽者以樂高積木製成參賽的機械車，並要於最短時間內完成一系列指定動作，今年稱作Smart Move。幾乎所有隊伍都代表學校出賽，但卻有一個團隊是以社區機構名義參加，他們便是森林小丘樂高俱樂部 (Forrest Hills Lego Club)，隊員也是以華裔小朋友為主，昨天他們便一共派出三個隊伍參賽，很多家長都在現場為子女熱烈打氣。 本身是麻省理工校友的森林小丘樂高俱樂部負責人賈黛華說，他們是一個興趣俱樂部，目前共有19名成員，年紀分別由9至14歲不等，宗旨就是提倡兒童對科學 的興趣，很高興成立以來得到很多家長及小朋友的支持。11歲的李明懿昨天便與隊友一起上陣，雖然陣前發生故障，但卻無損她的信心，與隊友待下一回合再來， 她的弟弟原來也是俱樂部的成員，父親李浩說，一家人能夠一起參與其中，其實是非常好的溝通渠道，對親子關係十分重要，同時，也培養出他們濃厚的學習興趣， 而這不僅只是在科學層面的。 2010-03-16 |
